I’ve talked about finding breath before and how crucial it is in the quest for peace and simply being. This past weekend I settled into group meditation for a few hours focused on ones connection to their breath and it proved to be a truly transformative experience. The ability to connect with myself in a personal, reflective, unassuming way grounding my spirit to my foundation that we deeply discussed last week.
As I embarked on the morning slowly waking up, shaking off the effects of a Saturday night in the city, in the presence of a few familiar faces and a few strangers, I noticed a certain energy begin to take shape. It was almost as if you could feel a sense of healing in the room. After a few introductory words and tips on keys to the connection of breath we headed out for an easy, silent 30 min run. As a group, I’m not going to lie, the first few minutes were a struggle. Resisting the urge to speak to one another as we anxiously settled into the cold air, seemingly barren streets, finding rhythm and cadence together. But just like most things worth doing, as time progressed the challenge turned easier and easier as we found our breath and became in sync. 20 individuals running as one. Each step creating light and space to connect and reflect.
I couldn’t help but think when we returned to home base the amount of power shared in those 30 minutes and how I could potentially use it to fuel the rest of the day, upcoming week and year. Following the run we moved into a deeper hour of guided meditation focused again solely on our breath, moving forward in time united by the still, calm, quiet energy that encapsulated the room. It was within that hour and half of personal reflection and connection that for the first time in the past several weeks I was filled with hope. Hope for what already exists, and hope for all that is to come.
Hope; a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen and additionally a feeling of trust.
As we approach the beginning of a New Year filled with new journeys and experiences it is my hope that, like that morning, we can all collectively find the light and cadence that continues to push us forward to becoming the best versions of ourselves.
We have traveled on quite the journey together over the past 50 weeks. As readers, I’ve challenged you in a variety of ways. Asking you to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. It has been my intention to help you build new patterns for success while creating sustainable change. As a coach I too have been challenged in many of the same ways.
Closing out on this year I challenge you to circle back to the moments and exercises that you found created the most impact within your life. Perhaps it was finding your breath, creating awareness, fear of failure/ change, eradicating self-limiting beliefs, letting go, creating S.M.A.R.T. goals, or finding strength. Whatever it is for you, I ask in the coming weeks, through the holiday season, that you take the time to reflect and tap into what gives you hope. Asking yourself, what worked best in helping you create or build change in certain areas? What is the measure of work that you still would like to do? How far have you come on your personal journey? How closely does your dream or ideal from the beginning of 2016 align with where you are now or what you would like to see in 2017? And most importantly how will you use this information to build for the future?
Hope is one of our biggest drivers to take action. Without it it is nearly impossible to move forward. With it, almost anything is possible.
